Surrey’s concentration of independent schools produces site types that are uncommon elsewhere: large campuses of converted country houses, purpose-built additions across extensive grounds, and in many cases residential boarding accommodation.

Boarding changes the problem substantially. The site is occupied around the clock, which means alerting has to work at three in the morning as reliably as at midday, and the procedure needs a decision-making chain that covers nights and weekends.

Residential accommodation also raises questions a day school does not face. Where pupils sleep, how they are accounted for, and how an alert reaches them without causing disproportionate alarm all need deciding rather than assuming.

Many Surrey campuses are spread across substantial grounds, with sports facilities, boarding houses, teaching blocks and administrative buildings separated by open space rather than connected by corridors.

That is precisely the arrangement wired systems handle badly, because linking separate buildings means external cable routes, and it is where wireless links between buildings deliver the clearest advantage.

Grounds coverage is the related question. On a campus where pupils may be a considerable distance from any building, external units positioned by where people actually are, rather than by the building footprint, become essential rather than optional.

The M25 and A3 corridors hold a high density of corporate headquarters and business park premises, and these sites approach the question differently from schools.

Offices typically need fewer devices because spaces are larger and more open, but the procedural questions are harder: who decides, how visitors are handled, and what happens in multi-tenant buildings with shared entrances and reception.

Access control frequently forms part of the answer here, since controlling entry is often more practical than relying on individual staff to secure spaces designed to be open.
